After over 15 years as an academic translator working on PhDs and double blind randomized studies, I got fed up. I wanted something different. However, there is much more competition in literary translation, so haven't done that much. I translated a short modernist novel by a Norwegian writer. It is on amazon here
Oh Barcelona by Rigmor Solem
Then I tried my hand at a few short stories that
«The Woman from Fez», a short story by Rigmor Solem
“Karen’s Christmas” (Translation of Amalie Skram's “Karens jul”)
“Where?” (Translation of Stein Riverton's short story “Hvor?”)
Literary translations actually turned out to be more difficult than academic translations in my view. First, the texts are longer, then they are more varied. Academics publish articles on autopilot, and these are written using templates, rigid rules and established guidelines.
